Cut the harsh.
Keep the soul.

Sensei Smooth listens for the frequencies that ring, whistle and bite, and pulls them down only while they stick out. One clean cut, nothing more. Free and open source.

一Listen

Hear the difference.

Same loop, twice: once untouched, once through Sensei Smooth. Switch while it plays. Both are level-matched, so louder never fools your ears.

0:00 / 0:10

Press play. The red area is what Sensei Smooth removes.

二The Cut

One clean cut.
Only where it rings.

A static EQ cuts all the time, whether the problem is there or not. Sensei Smooth decides again about 94 times per second, for every frequency.

  1. 01 Listen

The sound is split into 1,025 frequency bands with overlapping windows, so nothing gets missed between frames.

  2. 02 Compare

Every band is measured against its own neighbourhood. Whatever sticks out of that smooth line is a resonance.

  3. 03 Cut

Only those bands are pulled down, smoothly, and released the moment they calm down. The rest keeps its energy.

三Interface

Every control has one job.

The Sensei Smooth plugin: spectrum display with reduction and detection curve, control panel and bottom bar 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
1 The display
Live spectrum, the cut hanging from the top in vermilion, and the gold detection curve with up to six numbered bands you drag right in the display.
2 Amount
The one knob to start with: maximum reduction per frequency, from a light polish to a hard tame.
3 Precision & Threshold
How narrow the cuts are (1/3 to 1/24 octave), and how far a peak must stick out before it is touched.
4 Attack & Release
How fast the blade comes in, and how fast it lets go.
5 Detect & Channels
Listen to the track or to a sidechain. Stereo linked, L/R, Mid/Side, Mid only or Side only.
6 Delta, Mix & Out
Hear only what is removed, blend phase-aligned, set the output level.
7 Band strip
The selected band: on/off, shape (Bell, Shelf, Band Pass), frequency, gain and width.

四Modes

Three ways to work.

Delta view: the removed signal shown as a cream spectrum

Delta

Hear what goes.

Switch on Delta and you hear only the removed signal, and see its spectrum. Whistle and bite in there means you are right on. Music in there means: back off.

Sidechain mode: the vocal spectrum in indigo drives the cuts on the guitar

Sidechain

Make room.

Put Sensei Smooth on the guitar and feed the vocal into the sidechain. The guitar steps aside only in the bands where the vocal lives, and only as far as needed.

Guitar Sensei Smooth Mix Vocalsidechain
Two band-pass bands: only the ranges around 350 Hz and 2.8 kHz are processed, the rest is shaded

Detection

Point the blade.

Double-click the display to add up to six bands. Bells and shelves make Sensei Smooth work harder or softer in a range. Band Pass goes further: only those ranges are touched, everything else is left alone.

Drag a band for frequency and gain, mouse wheel for its width, right-click for its shape.
